Blue marlin around 280 lb on a rigged ballyhoo at the 95 Spot, tagged and released healthy. A 45-lb yellowfin came home for dinner.

July is doing exactly what July should do in Cabo. The water pushed past 80°F offshore this week and the first blue marlin flags of the season went up at the docks this afternoon. It's early, the fish are spread out, not stacked, but the ones that bit came in hot on the troll.

The steadier action is the yellowfin. Boats that found the porpoise 15 to 25 miles south had tuna from footballs up to solid 60-pounders, mostly on cedar plugs and hoochis pulled fast. If you want a cooler full for the table, that's the trip to ask for right now.

Dorado are just starting to show along the warm breaks on the Sea of Cortez side. Not big numbers yet, but the ones around are quality fish, and by August that inshore run turns into the most fun a half-day trip can be.

If you're in town this week: mornings are glassy, so an early departure buys you the calmest ride and the best bite. Any catch that isn't released is donated same-day to local children's charities in Cabo San Lucas, nothing goes to waste.
