Most weeks, the chisme on this page will be about somebody else, a captain, a fish, a guest who flew home with a story too good to keep quiet. But this is the first story we're putting up, and when I asked the guys on the dock what it should be about, they laughed and said: start with yourself, everybody already talks about you anyway. Fair enough. I didn't arrive at this marina with anything you could put on paper. No boat. No office. No last name that opened doors. I'm Mexican, born and raised, I live in downtown Cabo, and in the early years I got to these docks on the bus. I remember those rides well, going over who I'd talk to that day, which dock I hadn't walked yet, which captain might give me five minutes. These days I have a car. Most mornings I still walk. The marina looks different when you move through it slowly, and slowly is how you learn it.No llegué a esta marina con nada que se pudiera poner en papel. Ni barco, ni oficina, ni un apellido que abriera puertas. Soy mexicano, nacido y criado aquí, vivo en el centro de Cabo, y en los primeros años llegaba a estos muelles en camión. Me acuerdo bien de esos viajes, repasando con quién iba a hablar ese día, qué muelle me faltaba caminar, qué capitán me regalaría cinco minutos. Hoy tengo carro. The business got built one handshake at a time. My first deals weren't contracts; they were promises. An owner would let me fill one trip on one boat, and then he'd watch what happened, did the guests show up on time, did the money land clean, did anybody get surprised at the dock. When nothing went wrong, he'd give me another trip. Then another owner would hear about it. Eleven years later I know the owners and captains of these boats personally, birthdays, kids, engines with bad moods, and I'll tell you a secret: those relationships are the fleet. The data side never left me either. Cabo has a reputation for being expensive, and almost nobody actually checks the numbers, so I did. For years I've walked this marina dock by dock, recording the real price of every boat and every operation here; we've mapped 783 boats in this marina. That homework is why I can hand you an honest all-in price and stand behind it, and sometimes flat-out beat what you were quoted somewhere else. Not to fight anybody. And here's the biggest thing eleven years taught me. For some people, booking a charter is like buying a pack of cigarettes, casual, done it a hundred times, no nerves. For others it's the poster on the fridge: the trip they've been picturing for five or ten years. The family trip. The guys' trip. The girls' trip. You can't tell which is which from a message, so I treat every single booking like it's the poster.Y esto es lo más grande que me enseñaron once años. The part nobody envies: I'm still a one-man team, and eleven years of that means less sleep than I'll admit to my mother.
