Black marlin are structure fish, unlike blues, they hold near the banks and ledges. The Gordo Banks and the drop-offs east of San José sit one to two hours from our slip, and from Cabo San Lucas Marina the run up the Cortez side is usually the calm side. Most Cabo blacks run 200-400 lb; every season the banks give up fish far bigger, and the big ones turn a fishing trip into an endurance event. The play is patient and old-school: make bait on the banks at dawn, skipjack and bonito are everywhere in season, then slow-troll two or three of them, bridled, right along the ledges where the bottom climbs. The bite is a slow pull-down, the drop-back is long, and the circle hook does the rest. Crews watch the sounder as much as the spread; blacks sit near structure and bait, not open water.
